Statistics
An
alarming number of individuals are developing eating disorders in
the western world. Clinical
reports indicate that close to one million Canadians, and an
estimated ten million American females and one million American
males are affected by
Anorexia and Bulimia alone (National Eating Disorders
Association). Again,
according to NEDA, 25 million individuals are suffering from
compulsive overeating in the Unites States.
According to the National Eating Disorder Information
Center, approximately 75 000 girls and women in Quebec suffer from
anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
Although statistics are not available regarding the number
of males affected by anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in
Quebec, it is believed that an increasing number of them are being
afflicted by these disorders.
Moreover, because of the shame and prejudice associated to
eating disorders, the actual number of individuals suffering from
these conditions greatly exceeds the available statistical data.
